Caol Ila 12 Year Old
Caol Ila 12 is a lighter, more approachable peated Islay malt distinguished by an oily texture and citrus character. Much of the distillery's output feeds Diageo's blends, which makes single-malt releases particularly valued. Medicinal peat smoke, fresh lemon oil, sea breeze, briny seaweed, and sweet malted grain define the nose with a distant hint of diesel; the palate is oily and coating with bold smoke, citrus oil, building black pepper, and a sweet malty undercurrent over a drying structure, and a medium-long finish is peppery with lingering smoke and lemon. Bottled at 43% ABV by Caol Ila in Scotland, it retails around $50 to $70 and offers Islay peat in a comparatively light, citrus-forward form.
