Oldest Whiskeys by Age Statement

An age statement tells you the minimum number of years a whiskey spent maturing in oak. During that time the spirit extracts vanillin, tannins, and colour from the wood while losing harsher alcohols through evaporation — the famous 'angel's share'.

Older is not always better. Extended maturation can over-oak a whiskey, introducing excessive bitterness. The sweet spot depends on cask type, climate, and the distiller's intent. Tropical climates age whiskey roughly three times faster than Scottish warehouses.

This ranking showcases the most extensively matured expressions in our database, ordered by stated age.
How we ranked these

Ranked by age statement in years, descending. Only expressions with a numeric age statement are included — 'NAS' (No Age Statement) bottlings are excluded. The age statement represents the youngest spirit in the bottle per Scotch Whisky Regulations.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the age statement on a whiskey label mean?
The age statement represents the youngest whiskey in the bottle. A '12 Year Old' Scotch must contain no spirit younger than 12 years, though it may include older whiskies.
Why are older whiskeys more expensive?
During maturation, roughly 2 % of the cask's contents evaporate each year (the angel's share). After 25 years, nearly half the original liquid is gone. Fewer bottles, longer warehouse costs, and collector demand all drive higher prices.
What is NAS whiskey?
NAS stands for 'No Age Statement'. The producer chooses not to declare the age, often to use a mix of young and old casks for a specific flavour profile. NAS whiskey can be excellent — age alone does not determine quality.
