The Water Debate

Few topics generate more heated discussion among whiskey drinkers than whether to add water. The answer is straightforward: adding water can genuinely improve many whiskeys, and personal preference always takes priority over tradition.

The Science of Dilution

Research published in Scientific Reports (2017) showed that guaiacol, a key flavor molecule, migrates to the surface of the liquid when water is added, making it more accessible to the nose. At cask strength (60%+ ABV), many flavor compounds are trapped by alcohol molecules and only released through dilution.

When Water Helps

High-proof whiskeys above 50% ABV almost universally benefit from a few drops of water. The alcohol can numb your palate and mask subtle flavors. Dilution to around 45-48% often opens up new dimensions of aroma and taste that were hidden at full strength.

How Much to Add

Start with a few drops — literally three to five drops of room-temperature water. Taste. Add more if needed. You can always add water but you cannot take it out. Some professionals dilute to a standard 20% ABV for comparative evaluation, but that level of dilution is not necessary for casual enjoyment.

Water Quality

Use neutral, still water without strong mineral character. Distilled water or soft spring water works best. Sparkling water changes the texture and should be reserved for highballs.
