## The Major Whiskey Categories

Understanding whiskey types is the foundation of appreciation. Each category has distinct production rules, flavor profiles, and cultural significance.

### Single Malt Scotch

Made from 100% malted barley at a single distillery in Scotland using pot stills. Aged minimum three years. Single malts showcase the character of their distillery and region, from delicate Lowland styles to powerful Islay peat monsters.

### Blended Scotch

A blend of single malt and grain whiskies from multiple distilleries. Johnnie Walker, Chivas Regal, and Dewar's are iconic examples. Blends aim for consistency and balance, representing over 90% of Scotch sales worldwide.

### Bourbon

American whiskey made from at least 51% corn, aged in new charred oak barrels. Known for sweet, rich flavors of caramel, vanilla, and baking spice. Despite popular belief, bourbon can be made anywhere in the US, not just Kentucky.

### Rye Whiskey

American whiskey from at least 51% rye grain. Spicier and drier than bourbon, with peppery, herbal notes. Rye was the dominant American whiskey before Prohibition and has experienced a dramatic revival since 2010.

### Irish Whiskey

Typically triple-distilled for smoothness, Irish whiskey comes in four styles: single malt, single pot still, grain, and blended. The unique pot still style uses both malted and unmalted barley for a creamy, spicy character found nowhere else.

### Japanese Whisky

Inspired by Scottish tradition but refined with Japanese precision. Japanese distilleries produce a wide range of styles in-house, from peated to unpeated, because the tradition of inter-distillery cask trading is rare in Japan.

### Canadian Whisky

Often called rye whisky regardless of grain composition, Canadian whisky is typically lighter and smoother than American styles. Produced primarily from corn with rye or other grains added for flavor.
