The UK Proof, or Sikes system, derives from an 18th-century test in which gunpowder moistened with spirit would still ignite at 100 proof — a point corresponding to 57.15% ABV. This makes UK Proof and US Proof incompatible: 100 UK proof equals 114.3 US proof.
