## Why Glass Shape Matters

The shape of your glass dramatically affects how you experience whiskey. A proper nosing glass concentrates aromas, while a wide tumbler disperses them. Your choice of glass is one of the simplest ways to improve your whiskey experience.

### The Glencairn

The gold standard for whiskey appreciation. Its tulip shape concentrates aromas at the narrow opening while the wide bowl allows swirling. Designed in 2001 by Glencairn Crystal, it is now used by virtually every distillery and whiskey competition worldwide.

### The Copita

A stemmed nosing glass favored by professional blenders. The stem prevents hand warmth from prematurely heating the spirit, while the tapered shape focuses aromatics. Ideal for evaluating whiskey at lower serving temperatures.

### The Tumbler (Rocks Glass)

The classic Old Fashioned glass. Wide and sturdy, it accommodates ice and cocktail ingredients. The open rim disperses aromas rather than concentrating them, making it better suited to casual drinking and cocktails than serious evaluation.

### The Snifter

Originally designed for brandy, the balloon-shaped snifter works adequately for whiskey but the extreme concentration of its narrow rim can amplify alcohol burn rather than pleasant aromas.

### Practical Recommendations

For pure enjoyment and nosing, a Glencairn is the best all-around choice. For cocktails and on-the-rocks drinks, use a quality tumbler. For professional evaluation, a copita with stem provides the most control.
