About

A large cask similar in volume to a sherry butt (500L) but shorter and wider in shape. Puncheons are made with thicker staves, which can moderate the rate of flavor extraction. The different geometry means slightly different spirit-wood interaction compared to the taller, narrower butt. Both American and European oak puncheons exist in the whisky industry, each bringing distinct characteristics.
