## Protecting Your Investment

Unlike wine, whiskey does not improve in the bottle. But it can deteriorate if stored improperly. A few simple precautions will preserve your whiskey's quality for years or decades.

### Temperature

Store whiskey at stable room temperature, ideally between 15-20 degrees Celsius. Avoid locations with temperature swings — near windows, above radiators, or in garages. Extreme heat can cause the cork to expand and contract, breaking the seal.

### Light

Direct sunlight is whiskey's worst enemy. UV rays break down flavor compounds and can noticeably alter the spirit within months of exposure. Store bottles in dark cabinets, closets, or rooms without direct sun.

### Position

Always store whiskey bottles upright. Unlike wine corks, whiskey closures should not remain in constant contact with high-proof spirit, which can degrade the cork and introduce off-flavors. Standing the bottle upright prevents this.

### Opened Bottles

Once opened, whiskey begins to oxidize. A bottle that is three-quarters full will remain in good condition for one to two years. As the bottle empties and the air-to-liquid ratio increases, oxidation accelerates. Below one-quarter full, consider finishing the bottle within a few months.

### Sealed Bottles

Properly stored sealed bottles with intact closures can last indefinitely. However, natural corks may dry out over decades, so occasionally inverting the bottle briefly to wet the cork can extend its seal — but only very briefly.
